چکیده

A humanoid robot that can go up and down stairs, crawl underneath obstacles, or simply walk around requires reliable perceptual capabilities for obtaining accurate and useful information about its surroundings. In this work we present a system for generating 3D environment maps from data taken by stereo vision. At the core is a method for precise segmentation of range data into planar segments based on the algorithm of scan-line grouping [Jiang and Bunke, 1994] extended to cope with the noise dynamics of stereo vision. In off-line experiments we demonstrate that our extensions achieve a more precise segmentation. When compared to Murray’s patchletmethod [2003], we obtain a richer segmentation with a higher accuracy while also requiring far less computations. From the obtained segmentation we then build a 3D environment map using occupancy grid and floor height maps. The resulting representation classifies areas into one of six different types while also providing height information of objects. We apply our perception method for the navigation of the humanoid robot QRIO and present experiments of the robot stepping through narrow space, walking up and down stairs, and crawling underneath a table. keywords: Humanoid robot navigation, 3D environment perception, range image segmentation, stereo vision.

Rapid development system for humanoid vision-based behaviors with real-virtual common interface

This paper describes a rapid development system for vision-based behaviors of humanoid which consist of both real robot and virtual robot in simulation environment. Vision based behavior of a humanoid is very complex and difficult to develop, therefore simulation environment to develop it rapidly and efficiently, and to verify or to evaluate it is required. Previous simulator in robotics is lim...

Navigation of a Mobile Robot Using Virtual Potential Field and Artificial Neural Network

Mobile robot navigation is one of the basic problems in robotics. In this paper, a new approach is proposed for autonomous mobile robot navigation in an unknown environment. The proposed approach is based on learning virtual parallel paths that propel the mobile robot toward the track using a multi-layer, feed-forward neural network. For training, a human operator navigates the mobile robot in ...

Humanoid Navigation Strategy Using Fuzzy Motion Planner in a Uneven Smart Home Environment

This paper presents a fuzzy motion planner for humanoid robots in complex uneven environments. First, we define locomotion primitives for humanoid robots. A high-level planner finds a global path from a global navigation map that is generated based on a combination of 2.5 dimensional maps of the 3D workspace. A mid-level planner creates waypoints that help the robot efficiently cope with variou...
